Jan Kjærstad’s acclaimed novel Berge encompasses three voices: the journalist Ine Wang, the judge Peter Malm, and the eponymous Nicolai Berge, a suspect in the case and the focus of public rage. In celebration of Berge‘s publication in October 2019, we’re making short extracts from Janet Garton’s translation available for download here, to give a flavour of each of the three voices. We start with the stream-of-consciousness account of a wedding party by journalist Ine Wang, followed by a glimpse inside the thought processes of the judge Peter Malm as he deliberates over whether or not to take on the case.
